Programs

STARS is committed to empowering students by growing their leadership, technical and professional skills. In line with this vision, we host events and initiatives tailored to the diverse student body at UMBC. Our events range from professional development, community outreach, technical education, and recreational activities, providing opportunities for networking, skill-building, and personal growth.. Those who participate gain valuable experiences, and they expand their networks.

Conferences

STARS 2024 Celebration at the Tapia Conference

Conferences offer valuable opportunities for scholarly and professional growth. STARS actively participates in major tech conferences such as the Tapia Conference and STARS Celebration. Additionally, STARS offers fully-funded opportunities to attend these events. These conferences gather researchers, experts, and industry professionals to network, workshop, and discuss emerging topics in the field of technology. Attending allows students to gain diverse perspectives, engage with various sectors of the tech industry, and interact with recruiters for internship and job opportunities.

Professional Networking

STARS E-board connecting with CareFirst

Beyond conferences, STARS partners with various companies to directly connect UMBC’s talented students to internship and job opportunities. By hosting company engagements, students can explore the many career paths within the tech industry. These events serve as valuable networking opportunities right here on campus, helping students find their desired profession.

Campus & Community Outreach

STARS @ UMBC Student Orgs Event

Volunteering is at the forefront of STARS’s mission. We organize and lead several community service initiatives, both on campus and within the greater Baltimore area. From hosting coding bootcamps for middle schoolers to engaging with our student body, STARS @ UMBC is committed to making a meaningful impact in the local community.

Recreation

STARS @ the COEIT Game Night

STARS is more than professional work 24/7; we also prioritize recreation and social engagement. We participate in various events to relax, refresh, and connect with our peers. From the semesterly COEIT Game Night to our annual Senior Cookout, these activities foster a greater sense of community and promote a healthy work-life balance. Students are encouraged to unwind, build friendships, and create memories beyond academics and professional development.
